Upland rice occupied 47 percent of rice production area of the northern Thailand. Production of upland rice is facing with drought particularly in early stage of growth. This study was aimed at evaluation of indigenous upland rice for early drought resistance. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse. One hundred and eighty seven upland rice varieties including ULR 135 (resistant check) were grown in plastic pots. Randomized complete block design with 2 replications was laid out. Seeds were sown in pots under greenhouse condition. Two seedling were let to grow in each pot. Early drought was performed at 28 days after planting (DAP) for 17 days. Leaf rolling was recorded at 38 and 43 DAP whereas death leaf and recovery percentage was evaluated at 45 and...

Lao Taek is a traditional glutinous rice variety being grown by farmers in the northeast and some parts in the north of Thailand. It becomes popular because of its ability to give high yield, which related to high number of grains per panicle and high number of panicles per hill. It is questionable that Lao Taek might have genetic diversity among different growing areas. Collection of 6 genetic stocks from Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothorn, Sakon Nakorn and Nan were conducted during 2008-2010. These stocks were evaluated for their agronomic characteristics and yield performances in comparison with 3 accessions from the National Rice Germplasm Bank in Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center (URRC) in 2012 wet season. The results showed that agronomic...

Aim of this research was to investigate physical characters and some chemical characters of northeast local rice grain of Thailand. Physical characters were studied in term of weight, width and size of seed and dehusked seed including elongation rate and water absorption rate of 15 rice cultivars (cv.). Chemical test were checked by protein content, amylose content, lipid content, carbohydrate content, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3 and vitamin B6 content. The result showed that the longest seed of 15 cv. was Jowluang, 10.82 and 7.81 mm. in seed and dehusked seed, respectively. In contrast, cv. Kowjowhangmuyai (GS no: 554) showed the shortest seed and dehusked seed was 7.68 and 5.29 mm, respectively. The largest seed and dehusked seed were found in...

Fighting cocks breeders need effective rice. We conducted a survey of the needs and characteristics of local rice varieties that can be used as fighting cocks feed. Beginning with a survey from December 2013 to February 2014 the samples were 53 of Fighting cocks breeders in Mae Hong Son province. In a result, it was found that most of respondents were male. Age range was between 28 - 78 years old. The experience of fighting cocks breeding was 5 - 60 years. They raised 4-80 fighting cocks. Demand for rice was 6,881 kilograms per month. Colored rice or pigmented rice refers to the color of rice kernel such as black, purple and red which is form by deposits of anthocyanin in different layers of the pericarp, seedcoat and aluerone layers. This experiment was to evaluate nutritional values (anthocyanin, iron and zinc) of rice grain among local colored rice varieties. Variation among varieties for anthocyanin, iron and zinc concentrations were found in brown rice, white rice and bran. Significant amount of anthocyanin concentration was found in black color rice, whereas very low concentration was found in red and brown color rice. Among all black rice, the highest anthocyanin concentration was found in Niaw Dam 6 collected from Udon Thani (90 mg/100 g in brown rice) and (820 mg/100 g in...

Development of local rice variety at Krabi Rice Research Center is an experiment under local upland rice breeding program in the southern region for compensating rubber trees and oil palms. One hundred and twenty rice varieties that farmers grow in the southern region were selected to study since 2008 until now. The aims of this study are to record the characteristics, categorize, investigate, select pure rice seed, compare production and test on using nitrogen fertilizer. The result showed that this variety, Dokkha, is photoperiod sensitive. It has 332 kg per rai, straight clum 150 cm plant height and 145 - 150 days maturity, green leaves, 8 seeds per panicle, straw colored husk, 20.74 % amylose content and susceptible to rice blast disease. Variation in zinc (Zn) concentration in the grain of 50 local rice varieties from Southern Thailand was examined by diphenyl thiocarbazone (DTZ) staining (intense, medium, low, and nil) and chemical analysis. Intense staining was found in the aleurone layer of 94% of the varieties, in the embryo 56% of the varieties and endosperm 12% of the varieties. Variation was found in the DTZ staining intensity of the embryo and endosperm of individual grains, with Shannon-weaver diversity index (H) of the DTZ staining at 0.15-1.00 for the embryo and 0.00-1.00 for the endosperm. Chemical analysis found the Zn concentration in brown rice grain ranging between 18-34 mg Zn/kg, 7 varieties were considered high grain Zn (29-34 mg Zn/kg). The Zn concentration in the husk...

Beu Po Lo is a traditional rice growing for a long time and maintained by an ancestor as an inheritance and tradition for many generations. Beu Po Lo is well known with large round seeds, appearance and divide into three types as large, medium and small.grain size. They grow single plant species or two or the whole of all kinds. In addition to planting in upland condition, we found that some of “Score” Karen ethnic groups plant in field conditions. By another name called Beu...

Ten accessions of Pa-yah Leum Gaeng collected from farmers’ fields and 1,458 other upland rice accessions from the NRGB were evaluated for their adaptation and farmers acceptance on agronomic characteristics, grain quality and eating quality. The selected Pa-yah Leum Gaeng are glutinous upland rice with erected plant type, moderately strong stem and long-slender leaf with light green color. The internode color is yellow. The flowering date is about September 20th. The average number of panicles per hill is 9 – 10 while an average yield is 357...
